Rasa Dhatu

Timings: Lunch 12:00 PM to 3:30 PM and Dinner 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM on all days except Tuesday

Cuisine: Organic food, Vegetarian

Hunger hotline: 0821 2413090

Spice Levels: Low to Medium

Rasa Dhatu, a restaurant serving organic food, is nestled in the quiet neighbourhood of Vani Vilasa Mohalla, just off Kalidasa Road. The restaurant boasts of healthy, home style cooking using organic ingredients. Since this is what we were looking for, we decided to check out the food and landed up one day for lunch.
The restaurant is housed on the first floor of a building (there is a lift, in case you find the stairs difficult) which also houses Dhatu, the organic store. As we entered, we were greeted by nice soothing music and a cheerful waiter. The interiors are cozy, bright  and nicely done up.

As we sat down, the waiter handed us the menu card and we were set to start.
The menu comprised not only of the usual salads, soups and starters but also had whole wheat and multi grain chapati, brown rice, fresh fruit juices, Kashaya (healing drink), vegan milk and some interesting desserts. There was also the day's special written on a board.
I ordered the leek soup and my friend decided to try the lemon grass tea. The leek soup was light, fresh and wholesome with a nice dose of pepper thrown in and I would highly recommend it on a wet/winter day.  The lemon grass tea was fresh and the smell of lemon grass was appetizing. Incidentally, the menu indicates that they offer more than 40 varieties of tea from across the world.

Next we ordered we ordered the Potato Kababs and the Hara Bhara Kababs as starters,. The Potato Kababs were disappointing as they were nothing but boiled potato coated with corn flour and deep fried! Not at all healthy, one would say! The Hara Bhara Kababs were good, spiced just right and we enjoyed them.

For the main course, I ordered the Basmati Rice and Rajma curry combo. It was certainly well cooked and the spices were just right. I loved every bit of it. If you are in a rush, you could make this your meal (it is accompanied by papad and pickle).

Rajma and Rice!
My friend tried the whole wheat pasta with the Basil leaf Pesto sauce. She found it a little bland. Would appeal to foreigners, but for the Indian palate, it needs an additional dash of spice.

By the time we had finished tucking into the main course, we were stuffed. But as always, what is a meal without dessert! While there were many interesting items on the menu, we noticed the Millet based desserts and ordered the Ragi Laddus. The taste, at first, did not seem to be appealing but we loved it. It is an acquired taste and is close to the taste of rice, roasted and powdered. We would recommend the Ragi Laddus for dessert.

A 4-course meal for two would cost approximately Rs. 800-1000. It is a great hangout place and the food is good. For those of us who like vegetarian fare, this place is worth a visit.

I must mention here, that unlike in many other restaurants that we’ve visited, the waiter here was very knowledgeable and cheerful. We will definitely be going back to Rasa Dhatu for more and recommend that you check out the restaurant too. We would love to hear your views.

Caffe Pascucci!

Location: 2713/1, Adipamapa Road VinayakaNagara, Open from 9am to 11pm all days !

Cuisine: Italian

Hunger hotline: 0821 2511125

Caffe Pasucci  is like a gleaming ray of hope for continental food in Mysore. I went to this place once and I am hooked! Four visits in a week.. Phew! Yet, not sufficient to try all the items on their elaborate menu of over 120 dishes- Pizza, Pastas, Salads, Sandwiches, Paidinas (Wraps) ,.. the list goes on!

If you are a coffee lover- head to this Caffe.. right away because they have like 12 varieties of Expresso including a Decafe , 12 varities of Cappuccino , 7 kinds of hot chocolate and yes.. Brace yourself..5 options for filter coffee. All brewed to perfection by the brew masters trained in Italy and the coffee beans sourced from various countries!

Of course they also serve ice-creams, pastries, pie, soft drinks, fresh juices and different types of tea! I am not yet done with the menu here.. the  thin crust pizzas!  You have to eat it to know it!  This menu is also extensive as they give customer an option to design dishes with picks for the list of their ingredients.

If you are already impressed by the items.. now lets talk about the taste!  If you order pasta, you could expect well garnished, pasta of your choice soaked and served with creamy white or red sauce soft as it would melt in the mouth! A pizza would mean a well baked thin crust- topped with excellent mix of well cooked vegetables and indulgent mozzarella cheese!  While these are delicious.. The smoked chicken pasta with red sauce could be a disappointment!  The cafe options seem like a grand compliment to the meal bonanza. Served with fresh swirled cream and chocolate coated caramel sticks slipped in for added zing!

The fast moving items here are the veg and chicken Lasagne, Chocolate and coffee frappes, BBQ Salads and Apple pies! I personally found the Apple pie amazing but little dry. You might want to order additional Chocolate sauce to compliment it.

All said – the prices here are ahem..high! But the pizzas are well priced around 150 compared to the other famous pizza joints.  A veg meal for two including a starter, pizza, pasta and dessert would cost about 400 while the non-veg meal of the same items would cost about 500-550. If you are hard pressed on time maybe could order their express meal option which gets you a filling mix of various items.. what more it works out  cheaper too!

So what Mysore Foodies finally say:

Food- 4.00 burrrps!

Price- 3.00 burps!

Service- 3.75 buurps!

One final word of caution- Italian food demands acquired taste so if you don’t like anything.. give your taste buds some time.

Psst.. It makes a classic hangout destination!

Cafe Aramane

Cuisine- Multi cuisine (Vegetarian)

Location- Sayaji Rao Road, next to SBI

Café Aramane is a hot destination located amidst the hustle bustle of the famous shopping spot Devraj Urs Road and the connecting link to the city- the city bus stand. “Aramane” in Kannada translates to Palace in English, as the name suggests this restaurant has ancient royal interiors played down with simple and modest seating arrangements which make it a homely destination for many tourists and localities.  Its walls are adorned by paintings of the famous Mysore Dusshera procession. Its windows are artistically decorated.

From my innumerable visits to this place – all I have to say is, this place has never disappointed me, be it Chinese, North Indian or crispy yuuummm dosas with mouth watering chutneys. They also have a special dosa for every day of the week!!  The crispy vegetable noodles are also a very good option to look out for in their menu.

While you can be rest assured the main course is always going to taste good, the desserts though not a wide variety are enjoyable too. One thing you dare not give a miss here is the fruit salad with or without ice-cream. Luscious cuts fruits layered with sweet honey give it a very typical taste which makes it one of the must popular items on the menu.

The best part of the whole Café Aramane experience apart from the warm service is the modest rates. A meal for two inclusive of the desserts would cost about Rs.200. That’s it!

Gayathri Tiffin Room

Cuisine - South Indian (Breakfast)

Location - Chamundipuram main road

Gayathri Tiffin Room or simply GTR is one of those restaurants that define the taste of Mysore (for breakfasts!).  It is an iconic restaurant that is a must visit for anyone who comes into this city.

GTR represents the heritage of the city and the building is a testimony to the same. It is a couple of decades old and still maintains the old ‘look’. GTR is open only in the mornings till 11 AM. It is open on all days except Mondays.

After a wait of about one & half years and after facing many barriers – not being able to wake up early, 9 AM classes, landing there on Mondays and so on, we finally made it to the famous GTR. We had no choice but to be extra thrilled.

It has a tiny entrance which looks like old retail stores. The restaurant or the ‘tiffin room’ as it is known, has a wide variety of South Indian breakfast items – It serves Idlis, all types of dosas, puris and a myriad rice items.

We placed the order – Masala Dosas, kesari bath and idli vada by the counter at the entrance.   The service here is fantastic! We hadn’t even settled into our seats at the special "ladies and accompanied by ladies only" section (Yes - all you men need to be accompanied by women to enter this section), the waiter had already served the items.  We started with the Masala Dosa – I must say, we have tasted much better dosas in other restaurants but what was truly appealing about this one was the downright ‘homely’ taste. I suddenly remembered mom. I’d have probably thrown a tantrum or two if a dosa was burnt at home, but at GTR, I ate with gusto – because not many places can remind you of home when you are away.

The most delightful items we tasted were the Idli and the vada. It has been a very long time since we tasted that kind of authenticity. Our breakfast came to an end with kesari bath and coffee. We had hoped for stronger coffee and something extra in the kesari bath but I guess it was the ‘ homeliness’ of it all. I can’t say we were disappointed by that but were just happy that we had finally been to the Iconic ‘GTR’ and had an authentic taste of Mysore.

Oh by the way,  the prices – Modesty at its best! The entire breakfast went really light on our pockets. A breakfast for two would cost about Rs. 100.

So what do we have to say about GTR?? Good place for a decent breakfast, especially if you are on the run.  Idli – vada - a must try! For all those of you who haven’t been here before –  wake up early and head out to have a tasty start for your day.
